Investing has become a no-brainer

It was about one year ago that a press release came across our desktop about how to make money in the stock market. Its pitch went something like this...

It is no secret that what separates the rich elite of the world from the rest of us is the knowledge of investing and making money through the stock market.

For years, the precious secrets that allowed people to make maximum returns on minimum risk have been closely guarded. But "The Newbie's Guide to Profitable Stock Investing," blows the lid off of these tenants and now makes them available to each and every person looking for financial solvency.

"I wanted to create an easy to ready, simple to understand guide that could help anyone achieve their financial dreams," said author Edward Moraz. "With 'The Newbie's Guide to Profitable Stock Investing,' I feel that I've achieved my goal and given the average person the key they need to unlock the golden gates of financial investing."

The book is sure to cause a sensation by simply outlining the basic tenants and well-kept secrets only the richest investors have known for years.

"Even if you've never opened the business section to your local newspaper, [the book] makes playing the stock market easy to understand," said Moraz. "Throughout history, the biggest obstacle stopping "regular people" from dabbling in investing is simply not knowing where to start. With this book, each and every would-be investor has a jumping off point so that they may realize their personal financial dreams."

All of this is now obsolete, we believe. The reason why is because of artificial intelligence. There are now software programs so smart and sophisticated they make investing a no-brainer. Any moron can plug in the stock-picking robot and start making money. Sure, these systems cost a few hundred dollars, but would that not be a worthwhile investment if it can lead to a steady income for yourself? For example, the promoters of a program called Forex Ambush 2.0 reveal how a single mother who had absolutely no previous experience or knowledge of investing is using their system to earn a steady $5,157 per month.

Another robotic system, Stock Assault 2.0 promises similar earnings, but it works using stock picks, whereas Forex Ambush is based on foreign exchange currency trading.

It's sure a different era now than it was less than twelve months ago, when you had to read a book to learn how to pick stocks. Now, you just pick the software and then sit back while the robots earn money for you.

Happy New World!

Newly Launched Site Will Pay Top Dollar for Gold

Gold Guys USA, a jewelry, precious metals, and scrap buyer, is proud to announce the launch of its new online site. Gold Guys USA has been in the precious metals salvage business for nearly 30 years and is now offering its expertise online. For consumers with unwanted gold jewelry, they now can take advantage of skyrocketing gold prices. The gold industry has benefited from the current economic crisis. For people looking to both sell and buy gold, GoldGuysUSA.com is the right place to cash in.

“With the current economy, people are looking for instant money making opportunities,” says Scott Rubin of Gold Guys USA. “Now, with the increase in gold prices, people can really turn their unwanted gold jewelry into good money.”

Instead of approaching the nearest pawnshop, people are invited to visit www.GoldGuysUSA.com, provide their postal address and the details of the items they wish to sell and within 24 hours can have cash on the way.

Gold Guys USA does advise however, hanging onto some pieces of old jewelry. Selling old jewelry as scrap may not be worth it, especially if the piece is well made. Gold Guys USA experts say gold sold as scrap loses its retail value by approximately 75% or more. To take advantage of the rising gold prices, they advise selling those special pieces as jewelry rather than scrap. The scrap value, they say, is the value of the metal alone and fails to take into consideration the artistry or antique value.

Some pieces of gold jewelry have little or no resale value at all, say Gold Guys USA advisors. Old class rings, used garden-variety wedding brands or a single gold earring barely have a resale value and would make good items to sell as scrap. Advisors say to get the jewelry appraised to find out its actual worth. Credentialed appraisers are available at both the National Association of Appraisers and the American Society of Appraisers sites. The consultation from the appraiser is chargeable and may range from $50 to $200 per hour.

Gold Guys USA say it is essential to find out if the old jewelry is worth a resale. The prices of gold are based on troy ounces of 24-karat or pure gold. The troy ounce contains 31.1 grams or 20 pennyweights. Daily gold prices are available on websites such as goldprice.org. Gold less than 24K does not count as 100% pure gold. 18Kgold is considered 75% pure, 14K is 58.3% and 10K is 41.7%. All gold jewelry above the 10K limit must have a karat stamp.

GoldGuysUSA.com buys gold, silver, and platinum jewelry, scrap jewelry, broken scrap jewelry, gold watches, diamonds, sterling silver, gold dental, rhodium and coins. To learn more, please visit www.GoldGuysUSA.com

Are Low Carb Diets Bad?

We received a report about low carb diets this morning that suggests they may not be as good for you as we believed. The troubling thing is, the report knocking low carb diets comes from one of their competitors - a company that sells exercise equipment. Could there be a conflict of interest here?

America's fixation on low carb diets has been shown to be ineffective over the long term for dieters however study results released today suggests it may have harmful effects on brain function as well. The study out of Tufts University focused on women aged 22 to 55 engaging in low carb diets similar to the Atkins Diet. Participants were found to have significantly diminished memory scores than the control groups consuming a normal diet. Their scores were lower when tested for reaction time and visual spatial memory. The decline was short lived however as memory scores returned to normal upon resumption of a regular balanced diet.

The nation's obesity epidemic has reached alarming levels despite decades of fad dieting, ignoring American's simultaneous trend toward decreasing amounts of physical activity.

Americans today burn 700 calories less per day than they did during the 1960's. Treadmill desks (http://www.trekdesk.com) offer a unique solution compared with fad dieting. They offer employees the chance to burn significant amounts of calories during the day, enhance their health and at the same time enhance cognitive function.

"Study after study is showing that supplements and diets are at best ineffective at attaining long term overall health and many pose potential harmful side effects as well, yet proven methods such as walking garner slight attention," states Steve Bordley, President of TrekDesk, a treadmill desk manufacturer.

TrekDesk, a full sized height adjustable workstation, fits any existing treadmill. Featuring a 72 x 34 inch surface area, there is sufficient space for any desk related task. Workers simply place their computer, phone, files, reading materials, pens and paper and coffee (yes, it has cup holders) and start walking. It is that simple.

Consistent daily walking is very effective in both long term weight loss and also offers significant increases in brain function. A study by the University of Illinois recently showed that memory can be increased by as much as 15% in just 6 months, due to increased blood flow to the brain and that the production of small blood vessels in the brain can be boosted as much as 43%.

"A variety of studies have already proven that walking greatly reduces the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's later in life as well as offering protection from major diseases such as cancers, heart disease, and diabetes," stated Bordley, "weight loss is an important additional bonus."

The trouble with most weight loss programs we see is they are too expensive. Why should you have to pay for eating less? We'd like to see more emphasis on how to lose weight for free.

Gemstone For Boosting Men's Sexual Prowess

Is there something about the possibility of sexual dysfunction or impotence that causes men to cease rational thought and go into genital panic mode? Why is it that so many men seem obsessive about what is happening (or not happening) between their legs?

We were recently having lunch in a Vietnamese Pho restaurant, and the waiter brought a small ramekin of what looked like green salsa. "Our special hot sauce," he said. "Good for men," he added, gazing down at the area below his belt buckle.

We recall being in Malaysia and seeing hand-lettered signs for birds' nest soup promoting its being good for solving "man" problems.

It was therefore not a big surprise when we saw on a website that there is a special gemstone being touted as having the power to increase a man's sexual energy. Green Tourmaline is said to make a man stronger and more powerful throughout his body -- and particularly with regard to his reproductive system. This, of course, is code for being like nature's Viagra. A stone that's good for the stones. It helps you get rock-hard...

We once had the mistaken notion that when more women got into politics there would be less of an emphasis of testosterone in the world, but then along came Margaret Thatcher and now Hillary Clinton.

We are reminded of a scene in the brilliant HBO series, Deadwood, when Calamity Jane admonished a group of men in the saloon saying she had more balls than all of them put together. Maybe she was wearing a necklace of therapeutic Green Tourmaline gemstones.

7 Mistakes to Avoid When Applying for Social Security Benefits

Many people make the mistake of waiting too long to apply for Social Security disability benefits, according to Allsup which represents tens of thousands of people in the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) process each year.

"If you have become disabled and can no longer work for 12 months or longer, then you can and should apply for SSDI as soon as possible," said Ed Swierczek, senior claimant representative. "Many people make the mistake of thinking they need to wait until some specific time period has passed. This simply isn't true."

SSDI is a federally mandated insurance program overseen by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that provides monthly benefits to individuals who are under full retirement age (age 65 or older) and who can no longer work because of a disability (injury, illness or condition) that is expected to last for 12 months or is terminal. Individuals must have paid FICA taxes to be eligible. More details are provided in the "SSDI Overview" on Allsup.com.

Reasons For The Confusion

There are a number of reasons people might think they need to wait to apply for SSDI benefits, Mr. Swierczek said. For example, claimants might think they have to wait one year after their disability to apply in order to confirm the disability is long term.

"There are a number of ways to confirm that a disability is long term, including a doctor's diagnosis and medical evidence of a chronic condition or disease, and terminal illness," he said. "You don't need to be disabled and unable to work for a year before you apply."

Another reason people may stall is that they already have private long-term disability insurance coverage. "There are a number of benefits to applying for SSDI, even if you have private LTD coverage," Mr. Swierczek said. "One of those is that it freezes your earnings record for the years you are disabled, which can protect your Social Security retirement benefits." More information on the benefits of SSDI can be found in the section, "Why You Want SSDI," on Allsup.com.

Another reason for the confusion is the five-month waiting period for receiving SSDI cash benefits.

As Mr. Swierczek explains, "If the Social Security Administration approves SSDI benefits for you, there is an automatic five full months waiting period required before you can in fact receive those cash benefits. But this five-month waiting period is just for receiving the benefits. It does not determine when you can apply."

Another time element that can confuse SSDI applicants is the 12-month time limitation for receiving retroactive benefits. This is important and carries risks of lost income for someone who waits a long time to apply for disability benefits.

Here's an example to illustrate:

§ Ms. Smith became disabled and quit working in August 2005.

§ She did not apply for Social Security disability benefits until July 2007.

§ She was awarded benefits in April 2008.

§ The Social Security Administration determines that Ms. Smith's date of onset is Aug. 12, 2005. However, she did not apply until July 2007. The SSA will only award benefits going back 12 months from that date (July 2007 back to July 2006).

§ This means Ms. Smith's benefits will not go any farther back. So if she had applied when she first became disabled--she would have been entitled to several additional months of benefits.

Don't Wait to Get Started

One important reason not to wait is that the process of applying for SSDI can take several months, and in some cases up to two years or more, to receive an award from the SSA.

"There are a number of factors in the delays to getting SSDI benefits. But it's most important for people to realize that once they quit work because of a disability, their situations are not likely to get easier -- but rather more complex," Mr. Swierczek said. "Apply for SSDI sooner rather than later because it puts you on the path toward a better future."

For more information about the SSDI process, including "Seven Mistakes to Avoid When Seeking Social Security Disability Benefits," (http://www.allsup.com/About-Us/News-Room/Current-News/Seven-Mistakes-to-Avoid-When-Seeking-SSDI.aspx?=PRW4) go to Allsup.com.

Identity Thefts Help Crooks Rob Banks by Phone

A new federal indictment in New Jersey demonstrates how anyone can rob a bank by telephone.

On November 24, 2008, the U.S. Attorney for the state of New Jersey announced the arrest of multiple defendants “charged with engaging in an international conspiracy to deplete millions of dollars from U.S. victims’ home equity lines of credit (HELOC) using personal information obtained through identity theft and unauthorized computer access.” Those named in the case are alleged to have stolen financial account information and funds by calling the bank and impersonating real customers from institutions such as Citibank, JPMorganChase, Wachovia, Washington Mutual, Bank of America, Navy Federal Credit Union, Pentagon Federal Credit Union, U.S. Senate Federal Credit Union, the State Department Federal Credit Union, and dozens of other financial institutions. Those indicted are estimated to have successfully stolen more than $2.5 million from innocent customers of banks and credit unions, and have unsuccessfully attempted to steal approximately $4 million more.

According to the New Jersey U.S. Attorney’s Office, the defendants “routinely traded confidential customer information such as Social Security numbers, mother’s maiden names, and online banking passwords over e-mail; impersonated bank customers through a process known as “social engineering”; used technology to disguise caller identification information; and changed customer address information in bank files. Proceeds from the scheme, which currently exceed at least approximately $2.5 million, made their way to conspirators in Japan, Nigeria, Canada, South Korea, among other countries.”

“The facts as alleged by the U.S. Attorney unfortunately demonstrate that the warnings in my repeated testimonies before the United States Congress over the last decade have come true,” said InsideIDTheft.info editor Rob Douglas. “Americans’ financial accounts are not being protected by the financial industry. Anyone can rob a bank by phone.”

Mr. Douglas, an expert on the use of social engineering and “pretext” phone calls designed to steal financial account information and funds by phone, has repeatedly warned of the threat posed to the financial services industry by social engineering and pretext calling. Douglas is also an expert on the use of Caller ID Spoofing, also allegedly used in the NJ case. His testimonies – both state and federal – have resulted in a number of laws being passed. Yet, Douglas notes that the majority of banks are still easy picking for identity criminals and there is not enough being done by the financial services industry to protect the security of Americans’ funds.”

InsideIDTheft.info advises all Americans to do the following to protect financial accounts:

1) Never provide account information in reply to an email or phone call purporting to be from your bank. Reputable banks will never ask you to provide information by phone or email.

2) Use alphanumeric passwords and PINS for both telephone and web account access. Never use mother’s maiden name or other biographical data.

3) Monitor all financial accounts on a weekly basis to spot fraudulent transactions.

Fast-Food Survey From Animal-Rights Group Should Be Ignored

Today, the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom warned health reporters and editors about a deceptive "survey" of fast-food meals being distributed by an animal rights group calling itself The Cancer Project. As reported in this morning's Los Angeles Times, the Cancer Project survey recommends meatless meals such as veggie burgers and cheeseless bean burritos as the only way to avoid eating "unhealthful" fast food.

Center for Consumer Freedom Director of Research David Martosko said: "It's important to distinguish animal rights propaganda from genuine health advice. This so-called Cancer Project is basically an offshoot of PETA. Nothing more."

The Cancer Project is led by Neal Barnard, a past president of The PETA Foundation. More than two-thirds of the Cancer Project's budget comes directly from the wealthy founder of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. The Cancer Project's parent organization, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, has also received more than $1.3 million from PETA.

Earlier this year, The Cancer Project demanded that hot dogs be excluded from the National School Lunch Program. The single biggest study ever to examine meat and colon cancer diagnoses, a 2004 Harvard University project, found no link at all between the two.

Martosko added: "It's pure fiction to promote veggie burgers and bean burritos as a cancer-prevention strategy. This is just as much a part of the animal rights agenda as doing away with circus elephants and seeing-eye dogs. If you wouldn't take dietary advice from PETA, you shouldn't trust this 'Cancer Project' group either."

Interviews and reactions to The Cancer Project's survey are available. For a backgrounder on the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (The Cancer Project's parent group), see http://tinyurl.com/PCRM7things

Forex Ambush 2.0 Review

This report focuses on Forex Ambush 2.0, a membership program that claims 100% accuracy on the foreign exchange currency trading information it provides. But what does that really mean? Does it guarantee 100% that you will make a profit with each and every trade you make? I would not be certain on that score.

From the looks of it, Forex Ambush 2.0 appears to be an offering from those same folks who brought you Stock Assault 2.0, an automated stock picking software program we told you about last month. There are similarities and differences between the two systems.

While Stock Assault 2.0 is downloadable software, Forex Ambush 2.0 is a membership site you join. When we visited their website, we read that in the future the subscription rate was going to be $197 per month, but for a limited time there was an introductory special where membership could be obtained for a one-time fee of $197 and no further charges.

Another thing we noticed was that there was an impressively long list of testimonials from people who had success using Forex Ambush, but presumably this was the first version and not version 2.0. We do not know what the difference between the initial offering and this upgraded incarnation may be.

Nobody should get involved in any kinid of an investment program thinking they are going to get rich quick and therefore are willing to bet the farm. On the contrary, investing does involve risk and nobody should invest more money than they can afford to lose. That being said, if Forex Ambush is being sold with a 60-day money back guarantee, and if they suggest you can start making money with as small an investment as $250, then perhaps this so-called artificial intelligence technology may be worth looking into more deeply.

Americans are in crisis preparation mode

As the year 2008 draws to a close, three categories of consumer merchandise are enjoying record sales volumes—firearms, precious metals, and emergency storage food. The automotive industry may be going into the toilet, but families are spending money on crisis preparedness. We believe this shows how worried and frightened the population has become.

Firearms dealers all over the USA are having a hard time keeping any inventory on hand for anxious customers. Reports are that guns and ammunition are selling at levels up to 50% higher than previous records.

The demand for gold has similarly erupted. The third quarter of 2008 showed global sales 45% higher than the quarter before, which itself set the previous high-water mark.

Survival gear and emergency food producers are shipping product as fast as they can get it through their facilities and onto the loading docks. Using packaging technologies that deliver shelf lives measured in years and even decades, producers of storage food are experiencing unprecedented demand today for their products.

Victor Rantala, owner of the crisis preparedness company Safecastle LLC, said: “Our business volume this year will triple over last year, and most of this increased activity has come in the last 3-4 months.

“By far, our best seller right now is Mountain House freeze-dried food. It stores for more than 25 years, it’s easy to prepare, and it tastes great. Outdoorsmen and adventurers consider it a preferred staple. Our customers, those who are looking at a future that looks very uncertain, see it as a way to lock in today’s prices and to ensure a level of peace of mind that is hard to otherwise put a value on.”

Said Rantala, “Anxiety and bearish outlooks abound wherever one cares to look today. There’s precious little a concerned citizen can do in reaction to global forces spinning out of control. But we all do what we can. At Safecastle, we’re particularly happy to give our customers this holiday-season opportunity to become better positioned for what looks like rough times ahead.”

One highly respected company to deal with for emergency preparedness supplies is American Family Safety. Among the products they offer are the very useful customizable emergency kKits for home and school.

They have an extensive list of supplies for specific emergencies, including earthquakes, hurricanes, blackouts and even terrorism attacks. Although we do not believe people should panic about the times of trouble that may be ahead, it is always better to be safe than to be sorry. That is why it may be a very wise idea to be invest in a Safety Kit so you can stay safe.

Can we negotiate our way ouf of this economic crisis?

Could it be that the era of confrontation is ending and a new time of sitting down and talking over one's differences is beginning? Imagine meaningful negotiations between, for example, Israel and Palestine. Well, there is a new book that people are talking about that could help anyone in a negotiation situation.

Whether you're negotiating with an intimidating boss to keep your job, a big bank to keep your business alive, or an entire nation to keep it moving forward, one of America's best-selling new books has answers you'll need this holiday season.

In ''Negotiating with Giants: Get What You Want Against the Odds,'' negotiation expert and Harvard MBA Peter Johnston relays dozens of real-life David & Goliath stories from across history, surfacing lessons we can all use to handle the growing number of giants in our personal and professional lives. Color yourself less stressed for the holidays

Color experts are telling us that the color your wear can have a significant impact on your improve and make you feel not only happier, but less stressed. What could be more useful during this very stressful winter holiday time we're coming into?

We are told to wear green, the color of love, to enhance peace within yourself and encourage patience with others. According to experts, you can prevent getting anxieties about shopping by decorating for the holidays with green candles, table cloths, and ornaments to support harmony with family and friends. Feature green accent pillows and other emerald accessories to help keep that peaceful feeling throughout the year.

Color influences everybody's emotions. Madison Avenue marketing millionaires command its power, as do Hollywood film makers, interior designers, and every artist under the sun. Color affects everything you think, do, and say.

Did you ever wonder why you feel so good spending time with nature? Green is nature's color, the color of living things. Its balance of warm and cool is easy on the eye and distinguishes it as "the color of love and compassion."

Eliminate stress and expense anxiety by gifting loved ones with handmade, live or silk evergreen wreaths (circles are symbols of togetherness and longevity). Instead of traditional red accents, which may cause impatience, use blue (green's partner) for more natural inspiration. Just like the color of a crisp, springtime sky, add blue silk flowers, bows, or ornaments for more tranquility.

Spend fewer greenbacks by personalizing handmade gifts with the feel-good aspects of color for everyone on your list. Make custom, colored gifts with specific loved ones in mind.

Think ecology and green energy when creating your gifts to be responsible for the environment at the same time. Do you have any garage-sale treasures that you collected to re-color and re-new? (With a $5 investment, a little bronze paint, and tapered-green candles, I converted a rusty candelabra into a one-of a-kind beauty.) Have fun exploring dollar stores, bazaars, and flea markets as colored gems are eager for discovery.

All colors have special life-enhancing benefits. Consider these ideas to get started:
● Red/Excites and energizes: Fill a red container with cookies to sweeten the most seasoned sourpuss.
● Orange/Inspires play and spontaneity: Make a small, whimsical orange-flower arrangement to brighten a work-aholic's desk.
● Yellow/commands confidence: Bead a yellow bracelet with special charms for timid children, friends, or co-workers.
● Green/lovingly nurtures: Present an IOU with the gift of quality time. Show up with a picnic basket and head off to sit beneath a wise, old tree.
● Blue/clears the mind and is thought provoking: Gift your favorite water and sky picture (that you took yourself) in a frame.
● Indigo/inspires insight: Make a gift card for an evening walk in the country to count shooting stars.
● Violet/quiets and deepens inner peace: Sew an eye pillow in luxurious purple fabric filled with dried lavender.

Need more help delivering thoughtful gifts without spending too much? Wear blue to have clear ideas or orange to have fun in your creative process.

We wonder if our friend who wants to get an ex boyfriend back should wear any special color. She was sure feeling blue when she cried to us: "how can I get back my ex boyfriend"?

Drinking Red Wine Helps Alzheimer's

Scientists at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research have figured out why a substance in red grapes and red wine lowers amyloid beta levels that accumulate in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. Medicines targeting amyloid beta that make up the clumps in the hallmark plaques are now in many phases of experimental testing. The hope is that clearing out amyloid beta before it accumulates could stave off the disease and reduce symptoms. Scientists at the Feinstein hope to develop this natural substance, called resveratrol, or synthetic versions, for the treatment of Alzheimer’s.

Valorie Vingtdeux, PhD and their colleagues have discovered that a specific kinase – AMPK – controls Abeta levels. AMPK is an interesting protein because it is a metabolic sensor in the cells and throughout the body. It senses levels of ATP, the body’s fuel source. When ATP levels drop, AMPK is activated to prepare the cells to adjust to the metabolic change in the body – when fuel is low. It’s like a driver moving along at 50 and slowing down when it realizes that there is trouble ahead.

Resveratrol activates AMPK and in turn this protein lowers Abeta levels. Dr. Vingtdeux presented these findings at the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting in Washington, DC, this week. The work has been done so far in cell culture but Philippe Marambaud, PhD, who oversees the research, said there is every reason to believe that a similar process takes place in nature. “We hope that this result will translate into beneficial effects for Alzheimer’s patients someday,” said Dr. Marambaud. This is an important finding because the scientists identified a new potential molecular target – AMPK – to lower Abeta levels in Alzheimer’s. It also opens the door to considering more potent analogs of resveratrol. Feinstein scientists are now screening libraries of substances to see whether there are any compounds that could mimic the effects found in this substance. As it is, the amounts found in grapes and wine are small and it would not be feasible to ingest enough to have a benefit. The Feinstein chemists have identified several compounds that are now in different stages of testing.

Economic Troubles Bring Security Threats to Business

According to Mr. Roger Ameriks from Crown Security Group in New Zealand, his company is seeing increasing demand from a number of organizations and individuals who may not have previously needed security services.

Roger and his team at Crown Security Group offer global experience in security at the highest level, including Close Protection work for the Saudi Royal Family, Diplomats, VIPs, corporate heads and celebrities. The company also offers specialist training in security services throughout the world, sought after by various military and government agencies, and corporations.

Now, the team are seeing the world's financial sector in the security spotlight as stress levels continue to rise.

"Protocols need to be put in place to address all issues of security and personal safety in the business environment. We're getting a lot of enquiries from people reassessing their security needs," Roger says.

Redundancies are a sad reality of the world's struggling economy, with tens of thousands of people losing their jobs in recent months. Roger says disgruntled employees burdened by financial worries can give rise to a host of security threats for a company.

"Employers need to consider security issues when making redundancies. It's prudent to have a discreet security presence at redundancy announcements and meetings in case tensions boil over," Roger says. "An ex-employee has an intimate knowledge of a business, so measures need to be taken to remove risks to people and property should someone decide to act on their frustration at losing their job."

As economies falls on hard times, the likelihood of rifts between business partners and colleagues also increases. In many years of security at the highest level, Roger has seen anger erupt into physical aggression in numerous settings - including the boardroom.

"Financial pressure pushes people into desperation, and they do things they wouldn't normally do. Things can turn ugly very quickly - good security is about being one step ahead to avoid that."

Corporate heads may also face threats to their personal safety in an ailing economy as people vent their anger at losing money, or their jobs.

"Contrary to popular belief, close personal protection is not just for celebrities. For a businessperson feeling vulnerable, having a protection professional looking after their personal safety allows them to get on with their lives and running their business, and know they are safe doing it," says Roger.

Employee theft is another aspect to consider as people feel the pinch of a turbulent economy and rising living costs. A security audit can significantly reduce the risk of a company falling victim, Roger says.

Ultimately, he says addressing security in a business or organization is not about scaremongering or raising suspicion. "It's about raising awareness of security issues and putting sound systems in place to keep people and the business safe from the very real threats that are out there these days."

Healthcare industry using more radiology tests

Use of radiology imaging tests has soared in the past decade with a significant increase in newer technologies, according to a new study that is the first to track imaging patterns in a managed care setting over a substantial time period.

Study results are reported in the November/December 2008 issue of the journal "Health Affairs," which focuses on the pros and cons of the medical technology boom, the biggest driver of increasing healthcare costs.

A team of researchers from the University of California, San Francisco and the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle conducted the study using data from 377,000 patients enrolled in the Group Health Cooperative in Washington state between 1997 and 2006. The study population underwent five million radiology tests during this 10-year period.

Analysis showed an increase in all type of imaging technologies, with the majority of the tests being X-ray procedures. The average total imaging cost per patient, per year doubled during the study period, from $229 to $443.

The most striking finding was the increase in the number of newer and pricier tests such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans, according to the research team. In 1997, 13.5 percent of the study group had undergone a CT, MRI, or both, and in 2006 it was 21 percent. Study results showed the per-patient number of CT scans doubled over the 10 years, and the number of MRI scans tripled.

This increase in CT and MRI imaging appeared across the board, with no single patient group or disease group dominating, according to lead author Rebecca Smith-Bindman, MD, an associate professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, epidemiology and biostatistics, and obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at UCSF.

The goal with newer imaging tests is to use them in the most efficient and effective way possible and as a replacement for older, less accurate tests, emphasized Smith-Bindman. "But we found the newer tests, such as CT and MRI, are being added on top of the old tests, such as X-rays, rather than replacing them -- and this increases costs.

"Like first-time parents taking baby pictures, we may be overdoing it with newer diagnostic imaging tests. Using these tests wisely can detect treatable diseases and save lives. Excess imaging may be too much of a good thing. In addition to health care costs, we need to consider patients' exposure to potentially cancer-causing radiation. The benefit of testing needs to be balanced against the risk," she said.

Smith-Bindman's study confirms previous reports of a trend toward over-imaging, including one that found imaging has risen faster than any other medical service that Medicare patients receive.

The study findings also highlight concern about a correlation between the type of health care practice and rates of imaging, Smith-Bindman said. "Unlike managed care systems such as Group Health that receive a fixed amount to care for each patient, 'fee-for-service' practices get financial rewards for doing extra testing, including recouping investments in office-based scanning equipment. It is likely that rates of testing are higher in fee-for-service practice, and this habit of doing more imaging may be spreading into managed care."

The study did not address the appropriateness of imaging and whether the increase was associated with improvements in patient care, and this is an area that needs further study, the research team noted.

"Our results definitely highlight the need to curb unnecessary imaging. In future research we need to examine the value of imaging so that we can assess when the new technology leads to improved patient care and improved outcomes, and when the value of new technologies is limited or nonexistent. In all cases, we need to use the technology in a way that limits unnecessary exposure to radiation," Smith-Bindman said.

Study co-authors were Diana L. Miglioretti, PhD, associate investigator, and Eric B. Larson, MD, MPH, executive director, both of the Group Health Center for Health Studies.

The study was supported by funding from the Group Health Center for Health Studies.

The Group Health Center for Health Studies conducts research on preventing, diagnosing, and treating major health problems. Government and private research grants provide its main funding. Group Health Cooperative is a Seattle-based, consumer-governed, nonprofit health care system that integrates care and coverage.

UCSF is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.

Have you heard about medical tourism?

Let me show you my holiday photos. This is me in the hospital. These are the stitches from my operation. Sound strange? Maybe, but we think medical tourism may be the wave of the future.

Medical tourism is based on the fact that healthcare is so expensive in the USA that if you need or want elective surgery, for anything from a facelift or dental implants to a hip replacement or heart bypass, it's more cost effective to have the procedure done in India, Thailand or Costa Rica than at home in America. Maybe it's because domestic hospitals have to pay so much to insurance companies for malpractice coverage. I guess that blame would then go back to greed, or lawyers, or greedy lawyers, but that's not the point.

Whatever the root cause, surgery is so expensive in the United States that it's cheaper to fly to New Dehli and have your operation there than it is to stay home. Figures posted at medical tourism websites say you and a partner can fly to Thailand, enjoy the beaches, visit some temples, have an operation and fly back home for about 75% less. No wonder medical tourism is gaining so much attention.

Here's another twist: Companies are finding it cheaper to cancel their employee health benefit insurance and instead, self-insure their employees by sending them overseas for medical treatment. Of course the care they get is just as good. World-class healthcare quality is assured by dealing only with internationally accredited hospitals.

And it's not only happening in America. Canadians and Europeans, who have nationally funded healthcare, are going overseas because they don't have to wait in long waiting lists. Why wait a year for knee surgery when you can get it tomorow in Bangkok?

Isn't life strange?

Is Stock Assault 2.0 a Scam?

There is no question that the stock market and Wall Street have been dominating the news in the past few weeks, but I am surprised that, despite all of the hurley burley, Stock Assault 2.0 has been pretty much out of the discussion. Even though it may be under the radar, Stock Assault 2.0 is something that bears watching.

If someone offers you a deal that sounds too good to be true, the chances are it may be a scam. But let's look closer. Stock Assault 2.0 is a software program that picks stocks. Its promoters describe it as a stock picking robot with artificial intelligence. Their marketing text suggests a return on investment of as much as 13,000%, and that if you put in $500 you could take out $65,000. These are claims that certainly get our suspicious glands activated. But on the other hand, the operation looks pretty transparent.

Stock Assault 2.0 is sold with a 60-day 100% money-back guarantee. What is more, you can download a free demo to check out for yourself how it works and whether you think it is a viable way for you to profit from investments.

Our conclusion is that the software is worth doing some due diligence to investigate further. Of course you can't get involved in the stock market or any kind of investment without having an element of risk involved, and nobody should ever invest more than they can afford to lose. But we like the fact that the Stock Assault 2.0 people advise that investors start with as little as $50 and then see how it goes. There are lots of people who have just lost thousands and more whose portfolio has dropped by tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands. If I can get a robot who can pick stocks more smartly than a human can, I guess it's worth looking into.

People with Disabilities Need to Know Health Options

About 46 million Americans went without health insurance coverage some time during 2007. The impact of not having healthcare coverage can be even more pronounced for the millions of individuals with disabilities.

However, according to a leading provider of Social Security disability, financial and healthcare-related services to people with disabilities, there are options if individuals understand the Social Security disability process and know where to look for support.

People awarded Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits eventually do become eligible for healthcare coverage under Medicare. However, Medicare is available to most individuals only 24 months after qualifying for SSDI benefits. In reality, the time frame is even longer because SSDI benefits are not available until five full months after the onset of disability.

During the interim years, a number of medical services may be required to treat an individual's disability and ensure he and his dependents are receiving necessary care. Additionally, simply getting through the SSDI application process requires furnishing the Social Security Administration with up-to-date medical records based on recent medical examinations.

"If you have a chronic disability that has forced you to stop working, you cannot afford to be without resources to help you minimize your healthcare costs and ensure your access to needed healthcare services," said Paul Gada, Allsup's personal financial planning director.

There are a number of options for people awaiting Medicare eligibility, and details are available through Allsup's free Financial Matters personal finance portal. In particular, Gada notes COBRA or other private insurance; drug assistance programs or switching to generic drugs; and learning to negotiate healthcare costs.

Weighing COBRA Costs and Benefits

Someone who has lost a job because of a permanent disability can elect to continue using their former employer's group health plan through COBRA coverage. Employers who sponsor a group health plan with 20 or more employees are subject to COBRA, which allows former employees, their spouses and children to maintain coverage under the employer's health plan for 18 months of continuation coverage after they leave the organization. This can be extended for 11 additional months if the former employee is determined by the Social Security Administration to be disabled within the first 60 days of COBRA continuation coverage.

The downside of COBRA coverage is cost. Former employees' premiums are not offset by the employer as they often are for existing employees. This means that the premium for the first 18 months of COBRA can cost up to 102 percent of the plan cost for those still employed. The rate also can rise as high as 150 percent for the 11-month disability extension period.

Even so, COBRA coverage generally is less expensive than getting comparable individual private health coverage. In addition, if a person is continuing coverage when taking COBRA, he does not have to fear that pre-existing conditions won't be covered.

"If at all possible, you do not want to go without health insurance," said Gada, adding that if COBRA or private health insurance is not possible, individuals should investigate government programs, such as Medicaid, veterans assistance benefits, or state and local health services that provide health insurance coverage on a needs basis.

Learning about Drug Assistance Programs and Generic Drugs

People who can't afford their medications may lower their doses or simply stop taking the medications. However, many drug companies and many states have programs that offer lower income individuals help in covering drug costs. Eligibility varies by manufacturer and from state to state.

Switching to generic drugs also is worth investigating and can provide a 50 to 70 percent savings, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. While generic drugs have the same active ingredients as their brand-name counterparts, the inactive ingredients can differ. Therefore, it's important for individuals to ask their doctor first if using a generic drug is an option.

Negotiating Healthcare Costs

Most individuals are reluctant to ask about medical costs - let alone try to get a healthcare provider to reduce the cost. Yet, this can yield results. Keep in mind that most providers are not getting paid their established fees by insurance companies. They are being reimbursed at a lower rate.

Gada encourages people to do their homework: know how much is going to be charged and then ask for a better price. Consumers should ask providers about reduced rates for procedures, and the availability of free financing or extended payment options. They also may want to shop around. For example, is there another hospital where they can get the same level of care at a lower cost?

Many health providers also honor health discount programs (http://www.allsup.com/Healthcare-Discount-Program.aspx), which can offer 10 to 50 percent savings on various health services and healthcare-related products.

"It doesn't cost anything to ask, but it can cost a lot if you don't ask," said Gada. "When you have high healthcare costs and limited income, which is often the case for individuals with disabilities awaiting Medicare, you're really cheating yourself by keeping quiet."

New high resolution Sony single lens reflex camera

Sony is introducing its full-frame a alpha) DSLR-A900 camera, aimed at serious photo enthusiasts looking for
traditional SLR performance with the added benefits of digital photography.

It is designed to deliver ultra-fine picture quality with the world's
highest resolution, 24.6-megapixel, 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and fast
image processing with a new dual BIONZ(R) processing engine. The camera is
also the first to have a body-integrated image stabilization system for a
full-frame sensor with Sony's SteadyShot(R) Inside anti-shake system.

One look at the camera's distinctive pentaprism and nostalgic body design
will evoke its full-frame optical performance. It features a bright, clear
optical viewfinder with 100% field of view coverage that would impress even
film photography loyalists.

"The a (alpha) DSLR-A900 introduction solidifies Sony's position as a
leading camera manufacturer that can meet the demands of serious enthusiasts,"
said Phil Lubell, director of digital camera marketing at Sony Electronics.
"It represents the best in sensor and image processing technologies and offers
enhanced functions, performance and reliability so photographers can push
their creativity to the limit."

Ultra-Fine Images As The Human Eye Perceives Them

The camera's Exmor(TM) CMOS sensor delivers the photographic expressive
power of wide angles and perspective that only a 35 mm full-frame sensor can
offer, and is designed to take advantage of the resolving power of
high-precision a (alpha) lenses. Its high pixel count and large size provide
enhanced image detail and a wider dynamic range for natural color reproduction
and subtle tonal gradations.

The sensor is produced using proprietary Sony planarization technologies
to ensure an ultra-flat surface across the entire imaging area. Instead of a
single analog/digital converter, the sensor uses over 6,000 on-chip,
column-parallel A/D converters to convert analog signals to noise-resistant
digital signals at the earliest possible stage. The result is reduced noise
and high-speed transfer of data.

Image processing gets a boost in speed and power from the application of
two BIONZ image processing engines. Large amounts of data captured by the
24.6-megapixel sensor can be quickly processed to achieve a fast shooting
response. Additionally, this dual BIONZ processing system applies advanced
noise reduction algorithms producing images of exceptional quality and detail,
especially at high ISO sensitivities.

World's First Anti-Shake System for a Full-Frame Sensor

The camera's newly-developed, body-integrated SteadyShot Inside unit
achieves an anti-shake effect equivalent to shutter speeds faster by 2.5 to 4
stops. This new unit provides stabilization for Sony, Minolta and
Konica-Minolta wide angle, large-aperture lenses, which is difficult for
lens-integrated systems.

State-of-the Art Optical Performance and Responsiveness

The ultra-bright viewfinder with 100% field of view coverage and 0.74x
magnification enables accurate framing and preview. It features a high-power
condenser lens, an eyepiece with high reflective-index glass, and a
multi-layer, anti-reflective coating on every optical surface to deliver its
extraordinarily bright and accurate view.

Additionally, the focusing screen is user-replaceable, with additional
L-type (grid pattern) and M-type (super spherical acute matte) screens sold
separately.

The camera's newly-developed autofocus system consists of nine wide-area
sensors with 10 assist points for improved tracking of moving subjects. A
center dual cross sensor comprised of two horizontal and two vertical line
sensors as well as a dedicated f/2.8 sensor are included to achieve greater
precision, especially when using fast-aperture lenses.

It also offers high-speed continuous shooting of 24.6 mega-pixel images at
five frames per second. A newly-designed mirror box features a unique
parallel-link mirror mechanism that moves on two horizontal axes to
accommodate both 100% viewfinder coverage and the body-integrated image
stabilization system without increasing the camera's size. The mirror box also
has a new moving magnet actuator, a high-powered coreless motor for a faster
shutter charge, and a magnet catcher to minimize mirror bounce and light
refraction within the box.

Versatility to Unleash Creative Possibilities

The model's innovative intelligent preview function takes the guesswork
out of setting up a shot and the hassle of taking multiple shots to achieve a
desired effect.

After pressing the depth of field preview button, the camera "grabs" a RAW
preview image, which is processed and displayed on the LCD screen. You can
then fine tune white balance, determine the best level and effect of dynamic
range optimization, adjust exposure compensation and check histogram data, all
before you actually take the picture. Preview images are not recorded on the
camera's memory card, thus saving capacity.

Other key features aimed to expand creative options include the Dynamic
Range Optimizer (DRO) with five levels of user-selectable correction as well
as DRO bracketing for enhanced scene analysis and graduation optimization. EV
bracketing with +/-2EV range makes it easy to create high dynamic range
composite images.

Thirteen creative styles can be selected to enhance images and then
fine-tune by customizing contrast, sharpness, zone matching and other
parameters, while 3 user-programmable memories provide instant access to as
many as 26 different mode settings.

Powerful RAW file processing control is put in the photographer's hands
with the included Image Data Converter SR3 software that delivers faster file
processing speeds, easy adjustment of image parameters, Dynamic Range
Optimization and a new Peripheral Illumination function that compensates for
corner light fall off.

With the camera's HDMI output and Photo TV HD mode, your creative output
can be enjoyed on a compatible HD television. This mode brings the look of
actual printed photography to the television, by fine-tuning such image
parameters as sharpness, gradation and color.

Comfort in Your Hands

Its construction features rugged, lightweight magnesium alloy with
moisture-resistant, rubber seals for buttons and dials, an anti-static coating
to prevent dust adherence to the imager, and a high-endurance shutter rated
for more than 100,000 release cycles.

It has a 3-inch, Xtra Fine LCD screen (921K) which makes it possible to
check focus and image quality with accuracy. It incorporates an easy-to-see
display with a quick navigation menu to easily access common functions without
interrupting your creative flow. A backlit LCD panel sits on top of the camera
and displays key settings.

System Expansion with New Accessories

The A900 camera will be accompanied with an array of accessories like the
recently-announced Sony HVL-F58AM flash unit with its innovative Quick Shift
Bounce system, powerful performance with a guide number of 58, and wireless
auto flash ratio control.

The Sony(R) VG-C90AM vertical grip offers the same ease of operation when
shooting vertically as horizontally, with its button layout and low-position
shutter-release button. It also houses two InfoLITHIUM(R) batteries (sold
separately) for longer shooting and playback.

The DSLR-A900 body will be available in November for about $3,000 along
with related accessories. All will be available at authorized dealers, at
military base exchanges, Sony Style retail stores
(http://www.sonystyle.com/retail) and at sonystyle.com. Online pre-orders
begin on Sept. 10.

More physical therapists needed in US

Citizens attain important milestones with the assistance and dedication of rehabilitation professionals, or so says the National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation (http://www.nraf-rehabnet.org/), which is holding the 2008 National Rehabilitation Awareness Celebration on Sept. 21-27, 2008. Organizations, including Allsup, which represents people nationwide for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, are spreading the word about the significant contributions made by rehab professionals.

Rehab workers' value to the American healthcare system is demonstrated in national job projections for the next decade. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (http://www.bls.gov/oco/), several rehabilitation fields are experiencing increasing demand through 2016, including:

* Physical therapists, with a 27 percent increase and 220,000 jobs.

* Occupational therapists, with a 23 percent increase and 122,000 jobs.

* Respiratory therapists, with a 19 percent increase and 145,000 jobs.

Professionals working in rehabilitation, including therapists, nurses and physicians, help people with disabilities achieve significant accomplishments in recovery and daily living. The examples are numerous, such as respiratory therapists who help individuals to reach independence from ventilators, and occupational therapists who help stroke patients regain mobility. Estimates show that for every $1 spent on rehab care, $11 in long-term disability costs is saved, according to the National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation (NRAF).

More than 6,000 rehabilitation providers and health and human services organizations across the country are helping recognize "the powers of rehabilitation," according to Jim Brogna, NRAF executive director. This year's theme is, "Rehab: The Power to Change Lives."

During rehabilitation awareness week, the foundation, healthcare systems and other groups are expressing support for rehabilitation professionals who provide compassionate support in all areas to help patients improve their quality of life.

Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits

For individuals with a long term disability, here is news we recently learned about that could be of particular importance. It deals with social security disability insurance benefits.

Deciding how to move forward after a diagnosis of a long-term disability is a personal matter, but it's important that individuals do as much as they can to understand their financial options, according to Allsup , which represents people nationwide for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits (SSDI).

"No one is going to see your personal situation and circumstances, or your financial position the way you can," said Paul Gada, a tax attorney and personal financial planning director for Allsup. "You have the best perspective on what needs to happen next, but you don't have to go it alone."

Experiencing an injury, chronic illness or disease condition causes stress and worry for individuals and their families. It also places some concerns into sharper focus, including financial decisions and options. "Many people don't see the need for a budget because they have enough money coming in to cover their expenses," Mr. Gada said. "But encountering a disability and having to stop work dramatically alters the picture for people and their families. That's when all the numbers really need to come under the magnifying glass."

To help clarify these concerns, Allsup offers the following information about the role of Social Security disability benefits and financial calculators, which can help families get a better grip on their existing financial situation.

Why You Want SSDI

A diagnosis of a long-term disability generally means the end of someone's working days, but it's not the end of key decisions related to money and financial income, medical treatment or healthcare.

"One of the most important steps you can make is to apply for SSDI as soon as possible," Mr. Gada explained. "This can be a complicated process because it involves documenting your work history and your medical condition. You can make it less stressful on yourself by hiring a representative such as Allsup, to handle those complicated aspects."

Even if someone has a long-term disability insurance plan, there can be a number of benefits to applying for SSDI. These include regular monthly income, medical benefits through Medicare (http://www.allsup.com/Financial-Matters/Managing-Healthcare-Costs/Medicare.aspx) (after 24 months of entitlement to SSDI) and prescription drug coverage. More information can be found at Allsup.com in the section called, "Why You Want SSDI."

SSDI is a payroll tax-funded, federal insurance program. A portion of the FICA taxes you pay are set aside for SSDI (as well as Social Security retirement and Medicare). Social Security disability benefits are designed to provide you with income if you are unable to work due to a disability or until your condition improves, and guarantees income if your condition does not improve. Then once you meet your retirement age - 65 or older - you move from SSDI to Social Security retirement income.

The Social Security Administration's (SSA) definition of disability is different than other programs you may come into contact with through your employer or private insurance. The SSA pays only for total disability. No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.

Eligibility for SSDI is based on your inability to work. There are a number of requirements for eligibility, and the SSDI application process can be cumbersome--but it's an option that should not be overlooked. Choosing a representative can help you begin and get through the SSDI process with less stress.

Focusing Next on Finances, Healthcare

"If you know that an expert is handling that part of your financial situation, then you can start to focus on the next steps--handling the bills, covering your mortgage and meeting your healthcare needs," Mr. Gada explained.

There are several financial issues to assess for the coming months, especially knowing that the SSDI process (http://www.allsup.com/About-SSDI/SSDI-Process.aspx) can take someone as long as two years or longer in order to receive benefits. Most people don't have the background of financial planners. But there are a number of ways to evaluate your financial circumstances and get a better picture of where things are headed and, if needed, alter course.

To make this evaluation process a little easier, Allsup offers 11 financial planning calculators (http://www.allsup.com/Financial-Matters/Financial-Planning-Calculators.aspx) on its Web site. Each calculator highlights a specific financial perspective and helps answer key money questions for users. The financial topics include:

• Evaluating the household budget. Setting up a realistic budget may be one of the hardest things for some families, but it becomes critical following a disability. The Home Budget Analysis calculator (http://www.allsup.com/Financial-Matters/Financial-Planning-Calculators/Home-Budget-Analysis.aspx) provides a form to evaluate mortgage, utility costs, food costs and other daily expenses that can add up.

• Increasing cash flow. A long-term disability usually means money will be in short supply, so it's important to understand all available options until SSDI benefits are awarded. This includes evaluating personal resources, support from a spouse and government financial assistance. The Net Worth calculator (http://www.allsup.com/Financial-Matters/Financial-Planning-Calculators/Savings-for-Cutting-Back.aspx) gives a more complete picture of someone's available resources or assets, such as real estate and investments, and liabilities (what they owe).

• Decreasing expenses. Stretching the available dollars and reducing spending can make a significant difference while waiting for approval of SSDI benefits. Over time, a little savings can make a big difference. Try out some cost-cutting methods with the Savings for Cutting Back (http://www.allsup.com/Financial-Matters/Financial-Planning-Calculators/Savings-for-Cutting-Back.aspx) and Benefits of Spending Less (http://www.allsup.com/Financial-Matters/Financial-Planning-Calculators/Benefits-of-Spending-Less.aspx) calculators at Allsup.com.

• Getting a handle on debt. This is a significant challenge for those with disabilities and their families, primarily because two factors have collided: income has become more limited and healthcare costs are skyrocketing. It may pay off to evaluate your current mortgage, other personal debt and payoff strategies, including consolidation. Experiment with possible strategies through the Personal Debt Consolidation calculator (http://www.allsup.com/Financial-Matters/Financial-Planning-Calculators/Personal-Debt-Consolidation.aspx) or Mortgage Debt Consolidation calculator (http://www.allsup.com/Financial-Matters/Financial-Planning-Calculators/Mortgage-Debt-Consolidation.aspx).

One of the rewards when it comes to examining your financial situation is to realize there are a variety of tools available, Mr. Gada said. Consider all the options that may be available, even less likely options.

"It may seem like a drastic step, but some people decide to sell their homes and rent," he explained. "You quickly lower your monthly home payment and maintenance costs, avoid taxes and lessen the burden that comes simply from owning a home."

Other financial tools include refinancing the home mortgage or taking out a home-equity line of credit. Find additional calculators, including help evaluating the impact of one or two incomes, on Allsup.com.

"The situations vary so much between people and their families that there is no one-size-fits-all answer," Mr. Gada explained. "It's difficult because the decision to work has been taken out of your hands. But you have other decisions you can make that will help you get through this time, especially while waiting for SSDI benefits."

Can we wait until January?

Everywhere I turn are more signs the economy is going down the toilet. Today, Zoom airlines shut its doors, leaving 600 employees out of work and thousands of passengers stuck in airports in Europe and Canada. The likely reason why this airline went under? The ever rising cost of fuel has made nearly everything more expensive.

But that's not all. A report published today by the Better Business Bureau shows that Americans no longer trust businesses as much as they did seven months ago.

in 13 of 15 industries measured, with an overall composite Index decline in consumer trust of 14 percent. And nearly half (47 percent) of those surveyed say they have only “some, very little or no trust at all” in companies they do business with in everyday life.

The survey and Index, which measure consumer trust in businesses that they regularly deal with, were commissioned by BBB and conducted by Gallup. Based on its findings BBB will organize a business forum, ultimately geared toward reversing the current downward trend in trust between consumers and businesses. The BBB Forum will bring together a broad cross-section of senior leadership from across industries examined in its survey, including representation from small and medium enterprises, as well as multinational corporations doing business in North America.

It is very distressing to learn that only 33 percent or less of Americans have a ‘great deal’ or ‘quite a lot of trust’ in 11 of 15 industries measured in the survey,” said Fred T. Elsberry, President & CEO of the BBB Serving Metro Atlanta, Athens & Northeast Georgia. Trust levels have fallen 14 percent just from last fall when these measurements were begun. “This should defitinatley be a wake up call for businesses, especially in these difficult economic times. Consumers will do business with a company they trust and in turn companies of trust and ethics will be maintaining their customer base and making a profit no matter the economic situation. The link between trust and profitability is well established.

The first BBB/Gallup Trust in Business survey was conducted in September 2007; the second in April 2008. Consumers were asked to indicate their degree of trust in businesses using six categories: A Great Deal of Trust, Quite a Lot of Trust, Some Trust, Very Little Trust, No Trust or Don’t Know.

From the first to second survey, nine industries had a 10 percent or more drop in the combined “A Great Deal of Trust” and “Quite a Lot a lot of Trust” grouping, including:

  • Auto Dealers : -19 percent
  • Real Estate Brokers: -19 percent
  • Department Stores: -16 percent
  • Gas Stations: -15 percent

Another nine industries experienced a greater than 10 percent increase in the combined “Very Little Trust” and “No Trust” grouping, including:

  • Home Improvement Stores: +33 percent
  • Banks, financial institutions and stock brokers: +30 percent
  • Department Stores: +27 percent
  • Gas Stations: +27 percent

Department Stores and Gas Stations ranked in the top four in both the “Most Trusted” (dropped) and “Least Trusted” (gained) groupings. And only the Banks, Financial Institutions and Stock Brokers segment saw a greater than five percent change in the actual percentage of consumer responses in both the “Most Trusted” (dropped) and “Least Trusted” (gained) groupings.

In the opinion of this observer, we're racing toward hell in a turbo-charged handbasket, largely because of the near-criminal incompetence of George W. Bush and his corporate cronies who are happy to whistle at our plight as long as they continue to line their pockets.

Personally, I think the world would be better off if Barak Obama started running it sooner, rather than waiting until January to take charge.

डिजीटल फोटोग्राफी: ओवर १०० बिल्लिओं served

Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced that Canon Inc. has reached an important milestone with the shipping of its 100 millionth compact digital camera.

Compact Cameras - A Historical Look Back
Beginning in May 2000, Canon launched the breakthrough PowerShot Digital model, which featured a compact body with a stylish design. This model spearheaded the digital camera market’s later massive growth with its easy portability and simple operation, which won over millions of users worldwide. Following the introduction, Canon released a string of revolutionary products that drove market expansion while addressing the diversifying needs of users: the PowerShot A70 digital camera (2003), which sold more units worldwide than any other model that year due to its superb operability and cost performance; the smooth and chic PowerShot Digital SD10 Digital ELPH camera (2003); the PowerShot G7 digital camera (2006), which carved out a position for high-end models in the compact digital camera market; and the PowerShot S5 IS digital camera (2007), which combined a high-power zoom lens with precise image stabilization.

Canon began producing compact digital cameras in 1996 at Oita Canon, which continues to be the prime production site. Canon also has manufactured compact digital cameras at a number of locations, including Canon Opto (Malaysia) and Canon Zhuhai (China).

On the technology front, Canon has been a leader in pushing the evolution of compact digital cameras. Some notable contributions have been the DIGIC high-performance imaging processor, which processes richly detailed image data at very high speeds; Canon’s ultra-compact lens with built-in image stabilizers; and iSAPS technology, which controls exposures with high accuracy based on shooting condition predictions.

As a leading digital camera company, Canon is committed to delivering attractive products that satisfy every user by pursuing new technical breakthroughs to better capture those important moments, by elevating the Company’s renowned product quality, and by strengthening its sales and service platforms.

All referenced product names, and other marks, are trademarks of their respective owners.

This reporter remembers when digital photography did not exist. Now it is the industry standard.

Stars and athletes using gemstone jewelry

We have long been aware of the strange power of gemstones, with their energies that can heal, alter the mood and otherwise have positive affects on the human anatomy and psychie. Now we learn that no other than the great footballer David Beckham has discovered the power of gemstones to enhance his performance. We presume this performance enhancement refers to his activities both on and off the soccer pitch.

We now have learned that the Energy Muse gemstone jewelry line was worn this past weekend by U.S. Olympic Beach Volleyball players Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh and has been seen on David Beckham, popular LA Galaxy Soccer player and international star.

David Beckham has been spotted wearing Energy Muse gemstone jewelry at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards, at the Opening of Gordon Ramsey's restaurant in Los Angeles and at LA Lakers Games. Beckham wears Health, Prosperity, Transformation and Performance necklaces as wrapped bracelets. Youngs and Branagh will be wearing Energy Muse Strength and Prosperity necklaces throughout competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

U.S. Olympic Volleyball athletes Youngs and Branagh have received personal gemstone consultations from Energy Muse - now you can too. Energy Muse announces the immediate availability of two new services: Energy Muse Personal Gemstone Consultations and Energy Muse Custom Jewelry Design.

Energy Muse Custom Jewelry Design: Energy Muse is now providing customized gemstone jewelry to energize top athletes, performers and all those that seek an added personal touch to their jewelry experience. Energy Muse designers helped 2008 Olympic Beach Volleyball players Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh craft custom versions of the Strength and Prosperity necklaces they have worn during their Olympic-qualifying volleyball run. According to Elaine and Nicole, "Our Energy Muse necklaces were intended to help us get the strength we need to support and accomplish our Olympic goals this year and remind us of the balance, spirit and freedom that we're striving to always have as a team."

Energy Muse Personalized Gemstone Consultations. This exclusive experience places you one-on-one in the presence of Heather Askinosie, Chief Muse and a gemstone healing expert. As personal advisor, Heather helps those seeking to improve their performance, health, relationships, and prosperity using her unique process of communication and gemstone knowledge.

During a one-hour session Heather will use gemstones to assist in identifying and exploring personal goals, obstacle realization and prevention, and recommending the usage of crystals and gemstone jewelry that assist in the process of goal attainment

Demand has made this an exciting new service now available to a broader audience. While not therapy, many consider this session cleansing and helpful to the mind and spirit. These one-hour sessions take place at the Energy Muse Headquarters in Torrance, California.

Energy Muse clients also include motivational guru Anthony Robbins, L.A. Lakers Coach Phil Jackson, singer-songwriter Josh Kelley, two-time Emmy winner Jeremy Piven, ''Entertainment Tonight's'' Mary Hart, Heidi Klum, Seal, Kristin Davis, Britney Spears, Avril Lavinge, Hillary Duff, rocker Courtney Love, and musical artist Usher. ''Gossip Girl's'' Blake Lively can be seen wearing the Energy Muse Shine necklace in the just-released film ''Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.''

On a slightly different level, we have seen that therapeutic gemstone necklaces, as popularized by the Wind Spirit Jewelry website, have almost medical benefits. Aquamarine therapeutic necklaces are associated with spiritual awakening whilst Blue Sapphire gemstone necklaces have been associated with treatment of the symptoms of Alzheimer's.

Help for digital photography newbies

You know how yesterday I was saying that film photography was on the way out, and that digital photography was here to stay as its replacement? Well, today I just learned about a new publication that will help people who need a hand getting into the swing of using digital cameras.

According to a recent Simmons Market Research Study, the nation's 78 million baby boomers are being overwhelmed by an avalanche of increasingly intimidating high-tech gadgets. And, with more and more of them becoming empty-nesters as they age, the youngest of whom turned 44 this year, they can no longer rely on their tech-savvy Gen X or Y children for help.

Enter "Digital Diva" and acclaimed Orange County photographer Julie Diebolt Price and her new e-book, Babyboomers' Guide to Digital Photography, $24.95 plus tax and shipping, (www.babyboomersdigitalphoto.com).

"This book is for those who are confused by all the 'stuff' you have to know just to take pictures with a digital camera today," says Diebolt Price. "It is your opportunity to finally learn, and remember, all you need to know about digital photography."

The Babyboomer's Guide to Digital Photography is a concise (only eight chapters), easy-to-use aid whose sole purpose is to help you take better pictures quickly by cutting through all the technical jargon you find in many other photography books.

You'll learn:

• How to choose the camera that's right for you.

• The first thing to do when you take your camera out of the box.

• Simple techniques to deal with shutter lag.

• How to take pictures like a pro.

• How and when to use a flash.

• How to output your images - for print or Web.

• How to easily manage all the photos on your computer.

• A down-to-earth explanation of all those "geeky" photo terms.

• When and how to hire a professional.

Julie Diebolt Price, president of JDP Photography, is an award-winning photographer, educator, and passionate traveler. Her company's tagline, 'More than just a shot in the darkSM', gives you insight to her philosophy. Known for her personal style, cutting-edge photographic techniques, and keen ability to capture a story and have fun in the process, has led to numerous industry awards and recognition over the past 20 years.

As an early adopter of digital photography in 2001, Julie began teaching in small group and private tutoring sessions. In 2006, she designed and implemented digital photography classes at Santiago Canyon College in the Community Services department and is currently growing that series of class offerings.

For more information about Julie's upcoming Fall classes or to order a book, go to www.babyboomersdigitalphoto.com or call 714-669-4537.

And if you'd like an online digital photography tutorial, this is the website for you to go: http://digital-photography-tips.info/

My father was a semi-professional photographer who had a very elaborate darkroom set up in our basement. He taught me how to mix developer and other chemicals, and how to develop film, make prints with an enlarger, and the whole ball of wax. It's sad for me to see this whole world of technology coming to an end.

Summer vacation photo contest submissions will be accepted at www.fodors.com/contest/summer-vacation through September 5, 2008.

We have been recently informed by a well respected professional photographer that film cameras are going to be discontinued soon and that digital cameras will be the only mode of photography remaining. Look for the discontinuation of sales of roll film and sheet film within the next two years, and soon afterwards photofinishing machines and shops that process film negatives and prints will be as extinct as the proverbial dodo. Yes, digital photography has proven its superiority. For more tips on digital cameras including digital photography tutorial lessons, visit http://digital-photography-tips.info.

The weird and wonderful web; earth's kinkiest sites

From vibrating panties to psychedelic toads

I think I figured out that www doesn't stand for world wide web, but weird and wonderful web. I am constantly being amused and entertained by the kinky and crazy things I learn about humanity by surfing the internet. Take sex, for example. According to Dan Savage, there is a sexy forum or chatline for every inclination you can think of, plus several hundreds more that you would never think of.

Do you want to find a pair of vibrating panties? No problem. Here is a 7-function remote control vibrating thong. Or maybe you're looking for some lovely penis jewelry. Here is a handsome frenum loop ring. And we can't forget sexy cage pants.

Or maybe it's not sex but drugs that you're after. Well, where else but the internet would you look to get some magical Amanita muscaria mushroom caps. By the way, these are Latvian grade A caps. No stems included, of course. Want an hallucinogen from closer to home? Well, why not pick up a Colorado river toad or two. Just milk their warty little glands, dry up the venom and light up. I hope you don't think I'm making this stuff up. My imagination isn't that good, trust me.

Ok, we've covered sex and drugs. How about rock and roll? That's too easy. Here's a story that has 'em all beat: "Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll in Ancient Egypt." As I said, there's a very good reason why I love the Internet. It's more entertaining than reality TV. That's for sure!
